STREAM’s Hugh O’Sullivan (Marine Environmental Scientist at Waterford Institute of Technology) gave conference attendees an update on the STREAM project and its future plans in the coming months.

The conference was held on the 16-18th of June and attended by members of the environmental community in Ireland and abroad. The event was organised by the Environmental Sciences Association of Ireland (ESAI) and the Environmental Research Institute (ERI) in University College Cork.

Presenters from all areas of environmental science were represented in the areas of Water Quality & Resources, Wastewater & Water Reuse, Environmental Geoscience, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Management, Environmental Policy & Communication, Circular Economy and Sustainable Waste Management, Energy, Climate Change, Environment & Human Health, Air Quality & Urban Development, Marine & Coastal, Sustainable Land Use, Agriculture & Food, Biodiversity & Ecosystems, and Environmental Technology. Talks were stimulating and allowed researchers to share their ideas freely and make connections within the community.

Covid-19 restrictions had moved the conference to an online platform, Hugh found the chat functions and ice-breaking sessions particularly interesting as this allowed him to speak with like-minded researchers and explore the possibility for collaboration in the future.

He looks forward to attending the conference in person next year (fingers crossed) and presenting some of the data the STREAM project gathers from its remote monitoring sites across Ireland and Wales.
