EU-CONNEXUS is a transnational European higher education and research institution that covers smart urban sustainable coastal development from a global point of view. As an associate partner, Waterford Institute of Technology was asked to send a representative from the college to provide an insight into the research projects ongoing in the area of sustainable coastal development.

Marine Environmental Scientist, Hugh O’Sullivan presented the STREAM project to attendees from La Rochelle University in France, Agricultural University of Athens in Greece, Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest in Romania, Klaipeda University in Lithuania, Catholic University of Spain and the University of Zadar in Croatia.

The event was interesting because rather than just hearing presentations from academics, stakeholders such as port authorities and aquaculture operatives were invited to give their perspectives on shared challenges in the marine environment.

There is great interest in remote monitoring in aquatic environments at the moment and STREAM gained some excellent connections while learning about similar challenges faced in other countries. Hugh is looking forward to staying in touch with other EU projects and sharing his experiences while learning from others on how to tackle the global issue of climate change.
